Sport fishing in Key Largo is one of the best activities you can do to have some fun with friends or meet people who, like you, enjoy fishing, and one of the things that we all love about this sport is the possibility of taking home some freshly caught fish.
Although at Fantastic II Charters, we can fillet and clean the fish you catch so you don’t have to worry about doing it yourself, it never hurts to know how to do it. Here is a quick and basic guide on how to fillet a fish:
Setp #1: Use the right tools
Using the right tools is one of the most important things to have into consideration. You should have a fillet knife, which has a long, narrow and flexible blade to help you make thin cuts and be flexible enough to have control. Also, you should use fillet gloves made out of synthetic and stainless steel fibers to protect your hands from cuts while handling a sharp knife.
Step #2: Make the first cut
Make a diagonal cut where the head ends and the rest of the body begins, right behind the dorsal fin. The cut must be about one inch deep.
Run the knife down the side and continue making a horizontal cut from the dorsal fin all the way out to the tail.
Step #3: Continue on the opposite side
Repeat step #2 on the other side. Make sure the fillet doesn’t have bones, if it does, just remove them carefully and make sure the next cut is made a little bit less deep to avoid touching the carcass.
Step #4: Separate the fillet
Make several straight cuts from the head towards the tail to separate the fillet from the carcass. Be careful not to use too much pressure to avoid getting bones in the meat.
Step #5: Remove the skin
Run the knife down between the skin and the meat from the tail to where the head is (or used to be) to remove the skin and voila, your fillet is ready!
